Calvary Baptist Church
began September, 1963. The valley area was busy with activity,
and the area Regular Baptist Pastors of the Bethany Fellowship in
the North East Ohio area felt the need for another church. The
Pastors met together for prayer, asking the Lord where they
should start the new church. It was funded under the Program of
Propagation, headed by Rev. Earl Umbaugh, the state missionary
with the Ohio Association of Regular Baptist Churches. The Holy
Spirit guided them to the city of Hubbard. The first to attend
were some who normally drove to Sharon Baptist Church in Sharon,
PA. And the church was born.
Rev. William
Davis was the church’s first pastor. The new pastor and the
tiny membership met to decide on a name. They chose to call
themselves The Hubbard Baptist Church. The meeting place they
chose was the former Grace Lutheran Church on Church Street. The
buildings and property were purchased for twenty-five thousand
dollars. On November 24, 1963 the first official service was held
with Pastor William L. Davis preaching from Titus 2:14.
Interestingly, this was the first Sunday following the
assassination of President John F. Kennedy.
At the December, 1964 meeting, the discussion came
about that the First Baptist Church on Orchard Ave was contending
the use of Hubbard Baptist, since they also referred to their
church by that name. They decided rather than cause hard
feelings, they would incorporate using the name Calvary Baptist
Church of Hubbard.
